What is Gestalt Therapy?

Gestalt Therapy is about learning to address what is happening in the moment. It’s about confronting your feelings, with questions such as “how are you feeling now?” and personal exploration designed to gain a better understanding of yourself, your reactions, your feelings, and your senses.
Through Gestalt, patients are not looked at as a diagnosis. They are examined as a whole – mind, body, emotions – and are best understood both by the therapist and themselves when they are able to identify and share their feelings and experiences that they are having right then and there.

Alternatives to Gestalt Therapy

Although the approaches are very different, Gestalt has some similarities to cognitive behavioral therapy, also known as “CBT.” Both are present-focused. Both are very communication oriented, where your therapist tries to identify examples of problematic thought patterns. Both also rely on a strong connection between you and your therapist, which is why we make an effort to ensure each patient feels as comfortable and seen as possible.

That said, the styles are also very different. CBT is more structured, rigid, and involves goal setting. CBT also has different approaches depending on the diagnosis. Gestalt is about experiences and feelings, allowing you to take the conversation where you need to. It also doesn’t necessarily believe in the importance of a diagnosis, instead seeing individuals more as themselves.
